Patios & driveways in Cardiff & Newport

Paving, steps and landscaping in sandstone, porcelain and slate, built on a base that keeps it level and draining long after the first winter.

It is what is underneath that lasts

Paving, steps and landscaping built on foundations that last.

Outdoor work lives or dies on what is underneath it. We dig out properly, lay a sub-base that suits the ground and the traffic, and set paving with the falls and drainage it needs — then finish with the edges, steps and walls that make it look deliberate.

Indian sandstone, porcelain, block paving and slate: we will talk through what suits the property, the budget and the amount of maintenance you want to take on.

The paving we lay

The stone sets the look, the price and the upkeep, so it is the first thing we talk through with you.

  • Mixed-size sandstone patio running the length of a walled garden

    Indian sandstone

Warm, varied and forgiving of an older garden. Each slab is different, so the pattern is worked out on the ground before anything is bedded.

  • Porcelain patio with wide steps rising to the back doors of a house

    Porcelain

Crisp, consistent and almost maintenance-free. It asks for an accurate base and careful cutting, and rewards both with clean, even lines.

  • Circular lawn edged in brick beside a slate patio

    Slate

Dark and smooth, and at its best after rain. A natural partner for brick edging, lawns and contemporary extensions.

  • Slate steps running up through a gravel garden

    Driveways, paths & steps

Block paving and stone laid on a base built for the load, with the kerbs, edging and drainage that stop it spreading or holding water.

Step by step

How a patio or driveway runs

More of the work is in the ground than on top of it, and the order matters.

  1. Visit and quote

We measure up, look at the levels and where the water goes, and talk through materials. Then a free, no-obligation quote.

  2. Dig out

Old paving, concrete and soil taken out to the right depth and cleared from site, with services and drains located first.

  3. Base and drainage

A compacted sub-base to suit the ground and the traffic, laid to falls, with drainage channels or soakaways where they are needed.

  4. Laying

Paving set out dry to agree the pattern, then bedded, cut and jointed. Steps, edging and walls are built in as we go.

  5. Finishing

Joints pointed, the surface cleaned down, and turf, gravel or planting made good around the edges so the garden is ready to use.

FAQs

Patios & driveways: your questions

Anything else you want to know, call 029 2264 2498 and ask — we would rather have the conversation than have you guess.

It depends on the house, the budget and how much upkeep you want. Sandstone is warm and varied but needs an occasional clean; porcelain is consistent and very low maintenance; slate is dark and smooth. We will talk through each against the house and the garden you have.

It depends mainly on how the surface drains. A front driveway that lets water soak away, or drains to a border within your own property, generally does not need permission; one that sheds water onto the road may. We check before we quote and design the drainage accordingly.

That depends on the size, the access and how much has to be dug out. We give you a programme with the quote, and tell you in advance about the days when the garden will be out of use.

Yes. Drains and services are located before we dig, manhole covers can be set into the paving so they all but disappear, and paving can be laid around established trees and planting.

Yes. Breaking out and clearing the old surface is part of the job and included in the quote, and the site is left clean when we finish.

From the area, the amount of excavation, the material you choose and the detail — steps, edging, walls and drainage. You get a competitively priced, no-obligation quote with those shown separately.
